Berlin Diversithon

A Wikipedia Edit-a-thon to increase visibility of women scientists and other underrepresented groups in the life sciences

On the occasion of Berlin Science Week a day before the Future Medicine Conference 2019 we invite everyone to come together for a science editathon and diversify the world's encyclopedia!

Only 17.7% of English language biographies and 15.6% of German language biographies in Wikipedia are for women. There is also an underrepresentation of certain ethnicities and people of colour in science. Our Diversithon is looking to change that balance, but we need your help!

We invite you, whatever your gender, to join us for an exciting Wikepedia edit-a-thon in Berlin.

We all use Wikipedia, so why not help it grow and become more diverse? Participating in our event you can contribute to and improve Wikipedia. Editing scientists’ biographies is an important part of science communication. You can share and expand your knowledge while editing, engage in discussions with other people who are interested in same topics as you and spend an inspiring afternoon with colleagues.

“Studies have found that somewhere between 84% and 91% of Wikipedia editors are male. […] What we choose to edit is informed by what we know — not only in terms of our scientific expertise, but also from our own lived experiences. For women and people in other under-represented groups in science, that knowledge includes an intimate understanding of how our contributions are downplayed or outright erased from the history of science. The Wikipedia community should reflect the populations it serves — in race, ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation.”
